Three-dimensional education
“Life shrinks or expands according to one's courage.” Those words rang out at a recent memorial event for Michael Davies, History teacher and founder of Parallel Histories, who very sadly died in July 2024.
Michael was an inspiring teacher, and certainly courageous. Parallel Histories is an outstanding educational charity which supports schools to teach controversial and important topics.
Like other LRGS teachers, Michael knew that great teachers – and great schools – are three-dimensional.
The first dimension is academic. Our founder’s requirement in 1472 was for us to “instruct boys in grammar, freely”. Both boys and girls now, of course, with academic excellence and exploration at our core.
Life is much more than what happens in the classroom, however. Our second dimension is extracurricular. We are a boarding school, and we know that sports teams, ensembles, clubs, CCF, DofE, competitions, performances and trips are places where pupils learn how to lead and serve; learn how to win and lose; and learn lessons more important than victory or defeat.
The third dimension is pastoral. It has been wonderful to see our pastoral team’s growth – now in an expanded pastoral centre – with a deep commitment to pupils’ well-being. This is about valuing every member of the school. It is about good habits and education around diet, exercise, friendship and social media. Happy pupils are successful pupils, and nothing matters more.
Academic, extracurricular and pastoral. Work, play and friendship. Head, hand and heart. A great school is multidimensional, and so is life in all its fullness. Bon courage!
