Join the school
Who can join
Lancaster Royal Grammar School is one of the UK's top state grammar schools for boys aged 11-18, both day and boarding with a coeducational Sixth Form from 2019. Selection is by an entrance exam at 11+.
As a state boarding school, education is free to all pupils; parents who choose boarding only have to pay boarding fees, which are highly competitive. To find out more about state boarding, please visit our boarding pages.
When you can join
Although the majority of pupils enter the school at 11+, arrangements are made for entry at any stage up to and including the Sixth Form. A few additional places are sometimes available at 12+ 13+ and 14+ and are allocated on the basis of an entrance test.
An increasing number of students enter the school at 16+ on the basis of GCSE results and school report. The qualification for entry is a minimum of six passes at grade 6 or better plus a minimum of Grade 5 in both English Language and Mathematics. Students need a minimum of a grade 6 in any subject to be taken at A-level (grade 7 for Mathematics). Most candidates achieve GCSE results well above this minimum.
Overseas applicants
We welcome several overseas students every year, but we advise parents that as a state school, we are only able to offer places to sons of UK or EU passport holders, or those with Home Office work permits.
Please read on for more details about the application process to join LRGS.
