Forces Families

Forces parents may decide to choose boarding at LRGS as we can provide stability and continuity of education for your son from Year 7 to Upper Sixth. We welcome girls in Sixth Form.

Our pastoral staff fully understand what is required of serving personnel, and are available to offer additional support when needed.

We take full advantage of the inspiring landscapes with the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Forest of Bowland and Morecambe Bay on our doorstep. LRGS is easily accessible from the M6 motorway, just an hour from Manchester and less than three hours by train from London. As well as the global perspective that boarding brings, our international links include France, Germany, Spain and Italy. Tours for study, service and sport have taken our pupils as far afield as Iceland, Canada, Argentina, UAE, Barbados and Sri Lanka.

As an academic school, all pupils must meet the entry criteria to be offered a place.  Our boarding entrance tests for pupils in Year 7 to 10 are designed and marked by teachers in order to evaluate the level of education of any child joining us.  Testing will help us to understand what their progress level is, and academic staff will then work together with your child to ensure that they can achieve the very best they can in their future examinations.

Sixth Form entry is via reaching six grade 6s at GCSE including grade 5 in Maths and English.  If Maths is to be studied at A-level, a grade 7 at GCSE is required.

If you are a serving member of the armed forces who is mobile, you may qualify for the Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA). This ensures that your child will benefit from a quality education and well-rounded boarding school experience at a greatly discounted price. Qualifying for CEA means that you will only pay 8% of the annual boarding fee, from£410 per term. This covers all boarding fees, meals, laundry, some activities and exams. The only extras you would pay for are for your child's school uniform, equipment as well as some extracurricular trips. Compulsory exeats take place every half-term and students must return home or to a guardian after school on Friday and can return on Sunday evening.

Value for Money

LRGS provides excellent value for money, even before the Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA) as an employee of the MoD is taken into account. The CEA covers 90% of charges but parents may also be entitled to use Childcare Vouchers in addition.  For full details of your entitlement to CEA or Childcare Vouchers, please contact your employer.

Here is an example of how these allowances could affect boarding fees:
